The Wilder Toile
Introducing the Wilder Toile Family
What is Toile you ask: A French word meaning "linen cloth" or "canvas," toile is a type of canvas-like fabric that has been a popular decorating element since the mid-1700s. The term "toile" can have a few different meanings, including the canvas-like fabric itself, a repeated pattern on the fabric, or a test garment made from the fabric. For decorating purposes, however, "toile" refers to a pattern repeated on the fabric. Typically, the pattern depicts a highly complex, detailed, pastoral scene.
Pronounced "twall," toile has a long, varied history across Europe and the United States. The fabric originated in Ireland sometime during the mid-1700s, but became an extremely popular decorating element across Britain and France. Despite its Irish origins, the term "Toile de Jouy," meaning "cloth from Jouy-en-Josas"—a suburb of Paris—originated in France during the late 18th century.
What is Wilder Toile?
The Wilder Toile Family is a mashup of all my favorite dinner ware I like on my dining table. I love mismatched items that feel like a family.
Dinner plate, Everything Bowl + Cereal Bowl all with pattern repeat on the face.
Bread + Pickle Plate, Tumbler, Pinch Bowls all have a smattering of flora + fauna chosen by Thayer, except the tumbler, you get to choose!
All items are thrown by hand or hand built from slabs. Sometimes there is stock, other times your item is made to order. Reach out to inquire for lead time and what is in current stock.
Thrown in 50/50 stoneware/porcelain clay.
Rattlesnake Tea
I am one of those people that prefers tumblers vs mugs , then one day I put a handle on some random low cups I had thrown. I fell in love with this wheel thrown cup with an organic hand formed handle. A rustic chic teacup. I make these in limited quantities or to order.
They have a snake on the outside + snake on inside.
Thrown in 50/50 stoneware porcelain clay. Clay is left raw with brown snakes topped with clear glaze.
